10th August 2004, Holiday Week day 2, Rotterdam and Leiden.

My second and last day in The Netherlands was spent mostly in Rotterdam, quite a contrast from Amsterdam as it was heavily bombed during World War II and so has been extensively rebuilt with modern skyscrapers. I took a tram down to the docks area (after initially getting on one going in the opposite direction), marvelled at the Erasmus bridge and discovered I'd just missed a Spido tour of the docks area. Rather than waiting around I walked through the nearby park to the Euromast, an observation tower with impressive views over the city. Then back I went to the Spido boat and found myself a nice sheltered spot on the deck rather than cowering from the drizzle inside with most of the passengers. At least it was sheltered until we set off, once we were out on the water the wind made sheltering from the rain impossible, so I just got wet. The tour was unfortunately cut a little short by someone on board being taken ill, so we had to wait at the nearest landing area for an ambulance to arrive, the docks are impressively huge though. After that and it was back to Leiden for dinner with Nicole, then back to the airport and home.
